Wedding Dress Train Styles
You can choose to have a train on your dress or not, depending on your style of
wedding. Following are some helpful definitions as you begin shopping and/or
designing your dress. Unless you choose a detachable train, the train should be
bustled up in back for the reception, to allow you more freedom of movement and
two free hands to hug and welcome guests.
Attached: Falls from back end of skirt.
Capelet: Flows from back of shoulders.
Cathedral: Flows 2 1/2 yards from waist, falling more than 22"
on floor; usually only for very formal weddings.
Chapel: Extends approximately 1 1/3 yards from waist, falling
up to 22" on floor; most popular train today.
Court: One foot longer than sweep train.
Detachable: Joined to gown at waistline but removable for
reception.
Royal: Flows more than 3 yards from waist; longest train.
Sweep or Brush: Shortest train, falls about 6" on floor, best
for semi-formal weddings.
Watteau: Falls from back yoke of dress.
