Matching Your Dress to Your Style of Wedding

As you think about and shop for your wedding dress, it is important to keep in mind the style of wedding you are planning and to choose a dress accordingly. Following are the traditional guidelines for matching your dress style to your type of wedding:

Very Formal or Formal Wedding

The dress for the very formal wedding is floor length, in satin, lace, or peau de soie, and worn with a long cathedral or chapel-length train. The veil is usually full length and may be decorated with lace, beading or silk flowers. Long gloves may be worn with short-sleeved or sleeveless dress. For a formal wedding, the train is chapel length or a sweep train and somewhat less elaborate than the very formal. The veil is usually hem-length but a fingertip or shoulder veil or even a hat is appropriate. White kid, lace or fabric gloves are a nice accessory for a short-sleeved dress.

Semi-Formal Wedding

The dress for a semi-formal wedding is usually elegant and short or simple and floor-length, traditionally without a train. A street-length dress is complimented by a short veil, a long dress by a longer veil, if desired. The veil may also be replaced by a hat or flowers in the hair.

Informal Wedding

The bride in an informal wedding may choose to wear a street-length dress, a silk suit or jacketed dress in white, or any color other than black.
