Formal Wedding Announcements
In general, formal wedding announcements are sent to individuals who were not
invited to the wedding, for whatever reason, but who would be interested in
knowing of your marriage. For example, people who live too far away to invite,
those you are unable to include in a small wedding, and people for whom you feel
an invitation would imply a gift obligation. And, for the adventuresome and
carefree among us, announcements are appropriate after eloping.
Wording
The wedding announcement generally mirrors the wording
of the wedding invitation, with the request line, (i.e. "request the honor
of your presence at [the wedding of..]") simply replaced with "have the honor to
announce [the marriage of]" or "are delighted to announce [the marriage of]".
Mailing Announcements
Announcements are traditionally mailed the day of the wedding (after the
ceremony has taken place) or the day following the wedding. This is an area
where you could recruit a close friend or relative to help, asking them to mail
the announcements that you have already addressed and stamped.
