The Engagement Party
One of the most exciting parts of the wedding process is the round of parties
that take place even before the big day. The first of these is often an
engagement party.
Hosts and Type of Party
The engagement party is often hosted by the bride's family, although the
groom's family and/or close friends may wish to host one as well. There are no
limits on the number of parties; if your families live at some distance, they
may each wish to host an engagement party to allow other friends and family a
chance to meet your fiance. Similarly, there are no limits on the type of party:
coffee and dessert, a brunch, cocktails, or a cookout, formal or informal,
anything goes.
The Guest List
The guest list for these parties is usually relatively selective, limited to
family and close friends. The key exceptions to this are if you are having a
very small wedding and/or if a number of family and friends will not be able to
attend the wedding because of distance. Invitations may be handwritten, printed,
or phoned.
A Surprise or Not?
Perhaps the biggest decision to make about an engagement party is whether the
engagement should be kept secret until that point, or whether guests will know
ahead of time the reason for the celebration. Again, this is up to you and your
fiance: Can you keep your good news secret that long or will you let the cat out
of the bag?!
