Engagement Party Toast Traditions

Speakers

Traditionally, the father of the bride proposes a toast to the engaged couple. The groom's role is then to rise, thank the bride's father, and perhaps propose a toast or say a few words of his own. If someone other than the bride's parents are hosting the party, it would be their honor to propose the toast to the bridal couple. Any other individuals wishing to propose a toast could do so after the host/hostess.

Timing

The timing of the toast depends on the type of engagement party. At a cocktail party, the first toast would typically be offered once everyone has arrived. At a dinner party, the toast is generally proposed once everyone has been seated or as dessert is being served.
