The Wedding Invitation

The Pieces

The wedding invitation generally consists of some combination of the following pieces: the invitation itself, a reception card, a reply card, directions and/or lodging information, and an at home card. Other cards, such as a ceremony card, and a pew card may be used depending on your ceremony plans.

Style

The invitation sets the tone for the wedding; for this reason, you will want to consider the impression you would like your guests to have in advance of the wedding. Are you a very formal traditional type? Are you being married on a mountainside? Whatever your style, you can let guests know what to expect based on your choice of invitation paper, print type, style, and wording.

Getting them OUT!

Addressing the invitation envelopes can be a fun opportunity to gather several close friends or family members over coffee or lunch. In general, invitations should be mailed four to six weeks prior to the wedding, unless the wedding is held at a time of the year when people are likely to have conflicts, e.g. summer, holiday season; in these instances, invitations (or pre-invitation announcements) may be sent closer to eight weeks in advance.
