Choosing the Print for Your Invitations
Once you have decided on the style for your wedding, many of the invitation
issues will be relatively easy. For example, if you are having a formal wedding,
you will most likely choose to have your invitations engraved. If you are
feeling less traditional and/or are planning a semi-formal or informal wedding,
you will most likely opt for thermography.
Engraving
Engraved invitations date to the mid 17th century. In short, copper plates
are used to "engrave" the words of the invitation onto the chosen paper. The
distinguishing feature of the engraved invitation is the raised lettering which
can be felt as indentations on the backside of the engraved page. In addition to
being the most formal and traditional printing style, engraving is, not
surprisingly, also the most expensive.
Thermography
Thermography is a printing style that gives the appearance of engraving but
is not quite as formal or fancy, but that is also less expensive.
Another Option
Depending on the means available to you, you may also consider having your
invitations printed by computer either at a professional's shop or in your own
home. This is a creative option most likely to be used for an informal wedding,
but brides planning anything but the most formal wedding could also give this
careful consideration.
