Legal Issues
While love may have you walking on air, several legal issues that need
varying degrees of consideration and attention will bring you back to Earth,
even if only temporarily. The first one to be considered is the prenuptial
agreement. This is not something all couples choose to do but is certainly
something you and your intended should consider and/or discuss. The second legal
issue, and one required by all states, is a marriage license.
Each state has its own requirements so you would do well to check on those at
least a month or two prior to the wedding. Along with your change in marital
status comes the question of a name change. If
you choose to change your name, you should think about what your new name will
be, how to preserve your own credit history, and the documents and entities with
whom you need to formally make the change. Finally, as you enter this joint
future, whether you plan to have children or not, you should consider writing a
will. While this
is too happy a time to dwell on unforeseen disasters, putting a will in place
would facilitate arrangements for those closest to you in the unlikely case it
should become necessary.
