Marriage License
All states require that a couple obtain a marriage license, although the
requirements for the license vary by state. Some states require the couple to
apply together, in person, while others require separate applications. In either
case, application for a license should be made at the city hall, town clerk's
office, or marriage license bureau in the locale where the wedding will take
place.
How to Apply
The first step in applying is to call the clerk's office and to inquire about
the term of validity for the license. In some states, there is a waiting period
after application, before the license becomes valid. In most states, the license
is then only valid for a defined time, generally one month. It is also important
at this time to inquire about blood tests and/or physical exam requirements, and
how recently they must have been done prior to applying for the license. Many
states require blood tests, most for syphilis, and some as well for
rubella/German measles and/or sickle cell anemia.
Required Documents
If the state in which you are marrying does require a blood test and/or
physical exam, a doctor's certificate stating the date and results of the tests
will be required. In addition to the blood tests, states may require the
following documentation:
- proof of age or parent's consent if underage (must be certified
photocopies of birth certificate, immigration record, adoption record,
passport, baptismal record, or naturalization certification)
- proof of citizenship if not born in the U.S.
- proof of divorce if applicable
Who Pays?
Traditionally, the groom pays for the license.
