Elements of a Catholic Nuptial Mass

If you are to be married in the Catholic Church, you have two options for your wedding ceremony. The first is a nuptial mass, the second is a more simplified marriage service. If you and your groom are both Catholic, you may choose either option, although most Catholic couples choose the nuptial mass. If you or your groom is not Catholic, but you are being married in the Catholic church, you might want to consider the marriage service. The service is somewhat shorter than the full mass as it does not include communion. This provides for a less divisive service since guests who are not Catholic are not invited to take communion. The choice of a mass over a service is a good topic to discuss with your officiant.

If you do choose a nuptial mass, it will most likely include the following pieces:

  • Entrance/processional
  • Greeting
  • Opening prayer
  • Old Testament reading
  • Responsory Psalm
  • New Testament reading
  • Alleluia
  • Gospel reading
  • Homily/sermon
  • Rite of Marriage
    • Consent
    • Vows
    • Ring Exchange
    • Prayer of the Faithful
  • Liturgy of the Eucharist
  • Lord's Prayer
  • Nuptial Blessing
  • Sign of Peace
  • Communion
  • Solemn Blessing
  • Dismissal
  • Recessional

Marriage Preparation

To be married in the Catholic Church, you and your fiance will be required to participate in pre-Cana, a marriage preparation program. The pre-Cana program can involve several large group meetings between engaged couples and church representatives, a weekend retreat that condenses the multiple meetings into a shorter timeframe, and/or individual meetings with your priest. The format will depend on your particular church and/or officiant.

Personalizing your service.
