Specializing In Memorable Traditional & Custom Wedding Ceremonies

Making Your Ceremony Your Own
As you begin to think about your wedding ceremony, think about whether you
would like a ceremony as proscribed by your faith, church, or officiant, or
whether you'd like one that is personalized for you and your fiance. If you
choose the latter, discuss up front with your officiant those pieces of the
wedding that are mandatory and those which you have some freedom to
personalize. You should also inquire about any guidelines for material to be
included, either readings or music. For example, there may be guidelines on
secular readings and music that are allowed during a religious ceremony.
Guidelines will vary from church to church, officiant to officiant, and
religious denomination to religious denomination. In short, it's important that
you speak frankly with your officiant early on so that you are not surprised a
week before the wedding when you find out you can't include that particular
reading or special song.
Sources of Inspiration
There are numerous sources of inspiration if you'd like to personalize some
or all of your ceremony. First and foremost are you and your groom: What type of
public demonstration do you want to make about your relationship and your future
together? Family or social traditions, and ethnic or cultural customs may also
provide you with creative ideas. Parents and friends who have been happily
married for some time are good resources, as are books on weddings, literature,
poetry, songs, and of course the Bible. You may also choose to involve family
and friends.
The Nod of Approval
You will want to review the content, timing and sequence of your desired
service with your officiant ahead of time, in case any changes are necessary.
You will be able to test the service in person at the rehearsal a
day or two before the wedding.
A Wedding Program
Many couples choose to present guests with a program that
describes the wedding ceremony and identifies the key players, in addition to
the obvious bride and groom. This is a nice way to help guests follow along with
the ceremony, particularly if there are any religious and/or ethnic customs that
might not be known by all guests. It is also a nice opportunity for you and your
fiance to highlight those individuals who have been particularly important in
the wedding preparation as well as to thank everyone for sharing in your
celebration.
