Having Your Ceremony at a Religious Site
Reserving the Site
If you choose to have your ceremony performed at a religious setting, it is
important to contact that site at the earliest stages of planning. It is helpful
to have your first choice date and time as well as several alternate dates and
times when you first call, particularly if you are planning a short engagement
or are looking at being married in one of the more popular spring or fall
months. In some instances, the church or temple may have a coordinator who
oversees a calendar who could help you first reserve the date. In other cases,
you might deal directly with the clergy member who will marry you about
reservations for a specific date and time. Regardless of how the reservation
process works, in most cases, you will need to meet personally with a member of
the clergy for pre-marital counseling; the extent of this depends on the
traditions of the faith and the parameters required by the particular clergy
member.
Interfaith Marriages
If you and your fiance are from different religous backgrounds, you will want
to discuss this frankly with a clergy member as well. You may choose to include
two clergy, one from each faith, at your service; however, churches generally
have guidelines for this and you will make life less stressful by addressing it
up front.
Divorce
If you or your fiance has been divorced, be sure to discuss this up front
with your officiant. Some churches and some officiants have restrictions and/or
guidelines for marrying divorced individuals. Again, addressing this early on
will allow you to plan your ceremony as you both wish.
Photography
It will be important to discuss with your officiant any site restrictions on
photography. Some places of worship do not allow flashes to be used during the
ceremony; others may not allow any photography. If you understand these
restrictions ahead of time, you can work within them to capture your vows on
film as best as possible.
Many religious sites hold off reserving your date until you have met with
a clergy member. Since you will need the date confirmed before you do any other
planning, put this step very high on your priority list!
