Your Non-Religious Or Secular Ceremony Site
Many couples dream of being married on a mountaintop, in the woods, or at a
favorite old inn or historic site. If you and your fiance count yourselves among
these couples, then by all means, follow your heart. Many historic sites, bed
and breakfasts, inns, and hotels host weddings. Similarly, parks and other
outdoor sites are exciting and romantic possibilities. The sky's the limit, as
they say, although in this instance, you could even find some way to be married
in a plane or in a hot air balloon, if you so desired.
To begin your search, think about the setting you would like for the
ceremony, as well as whether you would like to have the ceremony and reception
in the same location. If you choose to do both at the same site, your selection
may be somewhat limited, depending on the size of the wedding, and the type of
reception you have in mind. Another issue might be your officiant. If you plan
to have a religious ceremony, there may be limitations on the type of setting in
which a religious service may take place. It is best to speak early with your
officiant in order to plan accordingly.
Once you know what your guidelines are, begin seeking out sites, if you don't
already have a specific place in mind. Explore local inns, bed and breakfasts,
hotels, and historic sites. Inquire about their ability and willingness to host
weddings of the type you would like. For outdoor sites, contact the local park
service or other local authorities for specific gardens or sites. Discuss the
possibility of having both a ceremony and reception at the site, if desired.
If you choose to have the ceremony and reception at the same site, be sure to
obtain clear guidelines on crowd size, hours, and food and beverage consumption
before committing yourself and making any non-refundable deposits. If the site
hosts weddings as a general rule, it should have reasonable guidelines. If
hosting a wedding is a new venture at a particular site, be clear on any rules
concerning alcoholic consumption, tents, catering, etc.
You have great latitude in choosing a ceremony and/or reception site--just
keep in mind parking, restroom capacity, and accessibility for the less abled.
If you choose an outdoor site, also be sure to make contingency plans in case of
inclement weather.
